Anchored on the theme “Campus Journalist: Making a Difference for the Environment”, DWCC Gazette amassed awards in both individual and group categories last 5th Regional Higher Education Press Conference held at Philippine Normal University, Manila, January 12-15.
Associate Editor Marvin P. San Juan grabbed 1st place in Sports writing, Copy Reading and News writing (Filipino). Benjie D. Galutan, Cartoonist, ranked 1st in Comic Strip, Editorial Cartooning and Literary Graphics (Filipino) while Arden Chester L. Morada, Cartoonist made it to 1st place in Comic Strip and Literary Graphics and 2nd place in Editorial Cartooning (English). San Juan, Galutan and Morada were given awards as Highest Pointers for English and Filipino categories.
Meanwhile, Leslie Ann D. Sanchez, Gazette Editor in Chief is MIMAROPA’s best Opinion Writer (English), 2nd placer in Feature Writing (Filipino) and 5th placer in Photojournalism (English). Gazette’s Sports Editor John Christian G. Cabudsan was awarded 1st place in Sports Writing (English).
Other winners include Mary Jane G. Salazar, Spirituality Editor, who placed 2nd in Editorial Writing and 3rd in Feature Writing (English); Joanne Catherina A. Perez, Managing Editor, copped 4th and 5th place in Photojournalism and News Writing (English); and John Rey C. Rodriguez, Literary Editor, seized 4th place in Poetry Writing (Filipino), respectively.
Moreover, the traditional annual circulations – tabloid, newsletter and literary folio - Katha, bagged three major awards that include Best Tabloid, 2nd Best Newsletter, and 3rd Best Literary Folio. Gazette’s pioneer magazine G-Speak, also received awards namely: 2nd place in Editorial and Sports page, 3rd place in Literary and News page, 4th place in Cover design and Page design and 5th place in DevCom page.
Out of 25 awards, Gazette got 23 thus making them 2nd best Performing School in the entire region.
Various colleges and universities from Region IV-B (MIMAROPA) partake in the said competition. It was made possible through the initiative of the MIMAROPA Association of Tertiary Press Advisers Inc. in coordination with the Commission on Higher Education Office 4B (CHED).
